On 31 July 1999 at the 29th Annual Golden Eagle Awards, Edward presented his father, Eddie Albert with the Friendship Award for his continuing support of Latin artists by the Nosotros Foundation (founded by actor Ricardo Montalban). Apparently Edward spoke in flawless Spanish and broke with tradition by wearing a denim shirt with his tuxedo - and cowboy boots! (Photos by Albert Ortega)

Born on 20 February 1951, Edward Albert has had a long, interestingly varied and extremely prolific career in his fifty five years. Since his Golden Globe award-winning starring debut (as an adult) in the delightfully poignant 1972 movie Butterflies Are Free he has made over 80 movies and appeared in numerous TV shows.

He was first and foremost, however, a family man and his marriage to former actress Kate Woodville (the beautiful Natira from the classic Star Trek episode For The World Is Hollow and I have Touched the Sky) lasted since the mid 1970's and the couple lived on a magnificent horse ranch in one of the most beautiful spots in California; the much favoured celebrity hideaway of the Malibu Hills.

There can be few people who don't know that Edward's father was the legendary Eddie Albert (with over one hundred movies to his credit!) and his mother was the well known Spanish dancer who took the name of 'Margo' during her career, although sadly died in 1985. Edward also has one adopted sister, Maria.

Despite his undisputed leading man looks, Edward always considered himself a 'character actor' and believed that he had a much more interesting career - while admittedly lower profile - than he might otherwise have had if he'd opted only for starring 'hero-type' roles. Indeed, like most actors, he found 'baddies' much more fun to play and certainly took his fair share of those! In 1997/8 he intrigued American TV audiences with his portrayal of the unscruplous and morally bankrupt Dr Bennett Devlin in the daytime soap Port Charles and became a favourite character.

This versatile and talented actor was always so good at portraying evil men that sometimes it's hard to remember just how nice he was in reality; actually the word 'nice' is hardly adequate to describe Edward. He wa a man of tremendous warmth, compassion and genuine concern for anyone less fortunate than himself. He was passionately comitted to the cause of the Native American people for whose rights he fought for many years, and to various other communities including the young Latino people in the Los Angeles area and also his very own Band of Angels.

He has also been the subject of some wonderful artwork. These are two prime examples inspired by his role on "The Yellow Rose" and in "Beauty and the Beast". The drawing on the left is by the multi-talented Austrian "Beauty and the Beast" artist and writer, Rosemarie Hauer (for ordering info. contact Rosemarie on: hauerry@eunet.at). On the right is a photo of an incredible painting by the award-winning Jamie Murray (for ordering info. contact Jamie on: myhr1@surfree.com). Both artists are well-known in "Beauty and the Beast" circles, and while Rosemarie specialises mainly in that area (including Ron Perlman), Jamie loves to paint fantasy and sic-fi characters of all kinds.

In October/November 1998 Edward again 'trod the boards' in a stage play in Los Angeles. He starred in 'Very Truly Yours', a new David Worby play. I don't think he had done live theatre for some years and with his vast experience I know heenjoyed the very different discipline. I have heard he was 'wonderful' in it and I have no trouble at all in believing that!

During the first half of 1999 Edward appeared as a Police Captain in a Spanish detective series "Reyes y Reyes", and in May he appeared in an episode of the current hit "Martial Law". He has also hosted a new TV show called "Keepers of the Wild", a documentary series focusing on wildlife and the environment.
